To kick off every school year, the brothers of Delta Phi Zeta host their annual philanthropy, Watermelon Bust. All sororities are invited to participate in this competitive week-long event. Each sorority team is paired with two Lambda Chi coaches who help the teams prepare. The first event is the Crescent Girl pageant where the ladies of Southeast compete in a talent show, dance competition, and question/answer portion. The following day, sorority teams compete in various watermelon themed games including tug of war, wheelbarrow races and many more.
Although it serves as a great public relations event for Lambda Chi Alpha, the main theme of this fun week is donating to charity. During 2010, a week-long blood drive was held that yielded over 300 pints of blood for the American Red Cross and all proceeds from Watermelon Bust were donated to local Cape Girardeau charities.
